OSCE Parliamentarians Gather in Vienna

Several members of the OSCE parliament gathered in Vienna to tackle some issues involving Afghanistan. Although the talk also involved several other topics, the issue surrounding Afghanistan was the main focus during the second day of the 9th winter session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The winter meeting opened in the Austrian Capital in Vienna and lasted for two days, from February 18 to 19, 2010.

The second day of the winter meeting in Vienna was attended by nearly 50 parliamentarians. This group of parliamentarians participated in the debate regarding the current situation in Afghanistan. The introductions of the debate were done by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the OSCE PA Vice President and the Head of the Kazakh Delegation; as well as Michael Voisin, the Assembly’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and France’s delegation head.

Since Kazakhstan holds the OSCE chairmanship, OSCE chairman-in-office and Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev delivered a speech addressing several issues, including that of Afghanistan’s. Citing a specific session of the OSCE Permanent Council last January 2010, Kanat Saudabayev stated that his country, Kazakhstan, intends to “pay special attention to Afghanistan.”

Aside from the Winter Meeting in Vienna, an international conference was also held in London, Britain last January in order to discuss several issues regarding Afghanistan. The participants of the January Conference showed their support for Hamid Karzai, the current president of Afghanistan. The group also expressed his support for president Karzai’s plans to promote and encourage the participation of low and mid-level Taliban fighters in their reintegration into the society.

During the Assembly’s session, the three general committees involved; namely the Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment, the Committee on Political Affairs and Security, as well as the Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions; were obliged to hold their own separate and joint discussions.

Pre-Flight Travel Planning Tips

When planning to take a flight, there are a number of important things one should do before boarding the plane. Whether it is for personal or business reasons, making sure you have made the appropriate preparations is a key component of having a pleasant flight experience. Below are a few pre-flight airline travel tips to help you prepare for your flight.

Pack Smart: Don’t put all of your essential items in one luggage bag. Divide the essentials between your luggage bags. If you do this and a luggage piece is lost, you will not lose all of your important belongings. Mark your luggage bags with something that will make it easy to identify. This will help prevent someone else from taking your luggage by mistake. When it comes to traveling with cash in another country, carry only the required amount of local currency that you need when you are in the foreign country. Make sure that you will be able to use your bank debit card in another country. As well, make sure you have the appropriate traveler’s checks that can be used in the country.

Make Copies of Essentials Documents: With any important document that you are taking with you on your trip, make sure you have made copies of those documents and they are stored in a safe place on your trip and in a safe place at home.

Flight Confirmation: It is important to call and reconfirm your booking about 24-72 hours in advance of the scheduled flight. Check with news sources such as local television to make sure there have not been any issues that will cause a flight disruption or cancellation. You can also check the airline online to see if there have been any changes with your flight.

Identification and Passports: Passengers over the age of 16 must show government-issued photo identification for domestic air travel such as a driver’s license or health card. For those under the age of 16, non-government issued identification such as a student ID card or birth certificate is recommended. When traveling internationally, every passenger, including their children, must provide a valid passport.

Visas: It is essential that you check the visa requirements for the countries you are visiting. The Consular Affairs website has a list of countries that you need a visa to travel to. Check the International Travel Reports to make sure there are no security, safety, and health issues with the county you are going to visit.

Insurance: When traveling to another country or even state or province, it is important that you are protected. Check with your Credit Card Company, home insurance policy, and auto club insurance to see if you have adequate coverage for medical emergencies, lost or stolen luggage…etc. Consider purchasing travel insurance. Make sure you know exactly what your coverage entails.

Immunizations: It is important to make sure you have the appropriate vaccinations for the health risks associated with the country you are traveling. In some countries, immunization is a requirement for entering that country. Anti-malarial medications may have to be started weeks in advance of the flight.

Prepare for Airport Security: Make sure you know what you can take on the flight and what is prohibited. Passengers are allowed to bring liquids, gels and aerosols through security screening as long as the items are packaged in containers with a capacity of 100ml / 100 grams or less, and that the containers fit in one sealable clear plastic bag.

Before you embark on your next flight, it is important to make the necessary preparations so that your trip will be relaxing and enjoyable.

Take a Trip to Aruba

Aruba is one of those places that most people couldn’t point to on a map. It sounds exotic and you could probably swear that you’ve heard good things about it, but there’s a certain aura of mystery that surrounds this island nation as well. If you’re the mysterious type and your interest has been piqued, take a closer look and see if this isn’t the perfect location for your next vacation.

Floating in the southern Caribbean a few miles out from Venezuela, Aruba has all the attractive qualities of its island neighbors with a little less traffic and notoriety. Basically, it’s about 70 square miles of pleasing, beach-themed, tropical paradise fun that will never leave you bored or unenthusiastic about having chosen this as your temporary hideaway from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. By means of land, ocean, and air, you’ll rediscover your playful side while recharging your batteries.

For example, if city life has left you struggling to breathe and longing to tickle your toes with sand and the salty sea, Aruba is the place to be. Surfing, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, and a few other pleasant pastimes are enough to fill your days, so be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen and a few swimsuits (you might get tired of wearing the same one day in and day out).

The trade winds of Aruba make it an excellent place for two more adventurous ocean activities, kite surfing and wind surfing, so adrenaline junkies take heed. Novices can try their hand at this engaging sport under the watchful eye of an instructor, and more experienced folks can head out on their own to one of the many ideal stretches of surfable waves along the northern or southeastern coasts. Either way, you’re sure to get some exercise, test skills you didn’t even know you had, and view amazing Aruba from a one-of-a-kind vantage point.

If you’re more of a land lover, don’t worry about twiddling your thumbs while the rest of your group has all the fun. Jeep tours will take you on safari, meaning that a professional guide will fill you in on all the historical, cultural, and geographical hotspots of the isle. You’ll sit in comfort for the in-between parts, but will have time to get out, stretch your legs, and move up close and personal to the exciting features of this dynamic island. The Natural Bridge, the Ayo Rock Formations, Alto Vista Chapel, and the Gold Mill ruins are just a few of the highlights that any sort of exploration will unearth, so whether you join a caravan or set out on your own, you’ll be sure to uncover a number of unexpected delights that make this more than just a beaches-and-cocktails destination.

Bicycling is another way to traverse the terrain; it can be a little rough out there so mountain bikers should feel right at home. The sand dunes and desert plains also make horseback riding an interesting method to hit the trail, and will likely make you forget just where you are. Golfing and tennis will give you some exercise in more traditional ways, but be sure to stop the game every so often to properly appreciate the stunning backdrop that rises behind you. It’s not every day you can tee off before an audience of parakeets and salamanders, after all.

For one more tempting taste of pure paradise, consider treating yourself to an appointment at one of the many spas on the island. Filled with trained professionals, the latest technologies, and plenty of jars, bottles, and vials that contain exotic elixirs and lotions capable of soothing you completely, you’ll enter with the lingering stress of your normal life but emerge feeling refreshed and revived. Basic manicures, pedicures, and salon services are available, but it is advised that you boldly book something more extravagant and cutting edge; hydrotherapy, Shiatsu, or a nourishing body wrap would all aid you in your quest to fully enjoy yourself during this trip.
